London 2012 Olympics: Day 16

The latest news and views from the London 2012 Olympics

  • Our coverage of the last day of the Olympics and the Closing Ceremony. It has been a phenomenal success for Team GB and London as a whole - and the final day saw GOLD for Anthony Joshua in boxing, SILVER for Freddie Evans in boxing and SILVER for Samantha Murray in the Modern Pentathlon. . Here are today’s main events:

    The Closing Ceremony: London officially extinguished the Olympic flame and handed over the Olympics to Rio. The paralympics start in two weeks.

    Modern Pentathlon: Team GB’s Sam Murray won SILVER in the last event of the Olympic games and fellow Brit Mhairi Spence finished 21st.

    Boxing: Team GB's Anthony Joshua won GOLD in the men's super heavyweight division. Kazakhstan's Serik Sapiyev won the welterweight gold medal after defeating Team GB's Freddie Evans 17-9. Evans claims a SILVER medal.

    Basketball: US 'Dream Team' (2012 edition) have won the gold medal after defeating Spain 107-100.

    Athletics: Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda has won the marathon! He wins their first medal in this event and becomes only the second ever gold medallist from Uganda.

    Cycling: Team GB's Liam Killeen crashed out of the men's cross-country event suffering a suspected broken left ankle.
